3811 Residence
Client/Owner: Private
Architect: John Ronan Architects
General Contractor: Frasier Construction
This residence, designed by John Ronan Architects, explores the beauty of texture through a contemporary and elegant juxtaposition of materials; board-formed concrete next to polished glass, metal, and stone. A sophisticated modernity is achieved with the rough and urban grittiness of the concrete accentuating the sleek and linear overall design.
The landscape design succeeded in addressing its own dualisms, allowing for family privacy while ensuring a neighborly transparency. A fine balance was achieved between active space for children to recreate and areas of delicacy and design where young feet cannot trod. A hedgerow of trees parallels the property line to the north, creating privacy and shielding views both outward and inward. An open and grassy play space is concealed within, enclosed from the street side by perennial grasses, flowers, and trees. This private family space flows into the limestone terrace of the “backyard,” wrapping around to a seating area and outdoor dining space off the kitchen inside. A garage roof deck provides an additional area for relaxation, a small vegetable garden in a series of planters, a miniature putting green, and a wall of planted bamboo, once again to shield views, creating privacy and an intimate enclosure while still in the open air.
