The Studios at 18th and Wabash SRO
Client/Owner: Chicago Christian Industrial League/Central City Housing Ventures
Architect: McBride, Kelley, Baurer Architects
General Contractor: Turner Construction

The Studios at 1801 South Wabash is a 170 room Single Room Occupancy (SRO) residence. The building, developed by Central City Housing Ventures and the Chicago Christian Industrial League responds to a pressing need for affordable housing in Chicago's South Loop.
McKay Landscape Architects provided the residents of The Studios with an arbor-covered terrace for a shaded sitting area as well as other outdoor spaces for socializing and peaceful contemplation amongst the calming natural forms of flowering shrubs, perennials, and ornamental grasses.  Stones unearthed during construction were reused to create a council ring on the lawn area, another locale for residents to relax, interact and share.  The space is safe, secure and enclosed, separated from the street and the crime and poverty of the area, providing a calming sanctuary that contributes vitally to a sense of community, both inside and outside the SRO.
