Located along the Ravenswood Industrial Corridor on Chicago’s northside a former manufacturing building was recently turned into a stunning single family home with two secluded courtyards. Prior to renovation the structure spanned the entire lot, limiting the landscape opportunities, but the spacious footprint of the building allowed for the removal of portions of the interior to create two private courtyards.
The first of these spaces is a central atrium focused on dining and entertaining adjacent to the home’s living spaces. A Japanese-style rock garden occupies the smaller courtyard, viewable from the bedrooms and master bathroom above. The overall design sensibility that unites the courtyards was inspired by the client’s love of Japanese design.
